| Finding Common Ground on Controversial Issues | |
| For many years, employers in industrial markets have taken responsibility for protecting workers. In research and development, employees test unknowns as a part of their job and implicitly accept hazards. In manufacturing, employees standardize processes and explicitly eliminate hazards. In regulatory affairs, the knowns and unknowns so that both groups can act accordingly should be carefully detailed and communicated. In 2016, 3M’s technical service organization reached out and surveyed employees for top customer needs on safety. In the global marketplace, we learned, it’s all over the map. Customers, in general, don’t pay much attention to instructions, nor do they consider the information user friendly. This session explains how the company is working through challenges, where common ground was found, who needs to be involved, and what the next steps are.
