Practical Guide to Evaluating Dermal Exposures to Your Consumer Products
Dermal exposures are the oft-ignored route-of-exposure when evaluating potential hazards from consumer products, even though the consumer population is routinely in dermal contact with products. This is especially relevant with the advent of wearable devices, which can be worn directly on the skin for extended periods of time. In this session, we will discuss various strategies and tools available for evaluating dermal hazard and exposure. Elaine Freeman will first discuss common dermal toxicity test methods and how those results relate to various regulatory and guidance values for those endpoints. Quantifying dermal exposure parameters, e.g., dermal surface area in contact with the product and dermal absorption for the chemical of interest, provide the most significant challenge in estimating dermal exposures. Ankur Singhal will discuss novel methodologies to estimate these parameters. Finally, Pamela Dopart will discuss modeling techniques that use the information learned in the prior two steps to estimate dermal risk to the target population. Examples of case studies will be provided.
