|Safe Use of Nanomaterials and Nano-enabled Products: Regulatory and Scientific Advances from the EU|
|The small size and high surface area of nanomaterials can result in unique properties not seen with larger particles of the the same substance. This has lead to an ongoing increase in their use in a wide variety of products such as sunscreen, televisions, and batteries. These properties make nanomaterials attractive for new products but has led to concerns regarding toxicological or ecotoxicological hazards not seen with bulk forms of the same substance. The European Union has sponsored a large number of projects to clarify these hazards, understand the risk to human health and the environment, and develop new risk mitigation measures for nanomaterials. In December 2018, the key regulation for chemicals, REACH, was updated to better account for nanomaterials, giving manufactures and users these materials new obligations if they wish to place these substance on the market in the EU. In the session, participants will receive a brief introduction to these regulatory changes and will then concentrate on how the outcomes from the EU-funded projects can be used to meet these obligations, to guide safety driven development of nano-enabled products, and to improve public understanding of nanomaterials. Presenters will give a brief introduction to these regulatory changes and will then concentrate on how the outcomes from the EU-funded projects can be used to meet these obligations, to guide safety driven development of nano-enabled products and to improve public understanding of nanomaterials.
