OEBs: A Practical Tool for Risk Assessment (PSX 2020 On Demand)
The goal of this session is to introduce the background and significance of occupational exposure categorization and banding, and discuss and demonstrate a procedure that product stewards or health and safety professional can use in order to maintain protection of worker safety in the absence of occupational exposure limits (OELs) or other guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health support the voluntary action of occupational health categorization and banding, as an impulse for occupational safety categories where specific equipment or procedures are defined and required for that category. The session will describe occupational health categorization, how it is similar to occupational exposure banding, and how it can be used in product stewardship program management. These procedures are currently used in manufacturing environments for active pharmaceutical ingredients, and can also have value for other industrial environments. The process and procedures for occupational hazard categorization will be presented and discussed, and the participants will have the opportunity to go through the occupational hazard categorization and banding procedures with exercises.
