Alternative Toxicology Methods: Current and Future Directions (PSX 2020 On Demand)
Product safety assessment and hazard identification and classification rely on data from toxicology studies. Although animals are still widely used for regulatory toxicology testing, efforts have been made over the last few decades to replace and reduce animal use in toxicology tests. Known as alternative methods, these methods often provide approaches that improve human relevance, while replacing or reducing animal use. In the US, the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM) coordinates efforts to validate new or revised toxicology test methods to meet the needs of US regulatory agencies, including CPSC and EPA, that have toxicology requirements.

The first part of this session will describe the current status of regulatory accepted alternative methods in the US, including methods with OECD guidelines that have been validated by ICCVAM for use by US regulatory agencies. Future directions of alternative toxicology test methods will also be described, including new approach methodologies and integrated approaches to testing and assessment. The second part of the session will provide case studies of how alternative toxicology test methods can be used for product hazard classification purposes.
