Expanding Regulatory Focus on Chemicals in Articles (PSX 2020 On Demand)
For decades, chemicals in articles have received limited regulatory attention in the U.S., based largely on the assumption that they present limited environment and human health risk. Increasingly, however, concerns regarding persistence and bioaccumulation as indicated by regulatory restrictions on PFAS uses, other SNURs, composite wood products rules, TSCA risk evaluation fee notices, and other initiatives. Thus, regulated businesses will face obligations for articles that require knowledge of articles' chemical content and suppliers of chemical components for downstream product manufacturers will need to institute more stewardship regarding downstream uses. Given that current compliance management systems do not extensively focus on articles, these new obligations present challenges for product stewards. This session will use case studies to discuss options and best practices for efficiently adapting compliance management to meet the challenge of emerging regulation of chemicals in articles.
