Opportunities and Pitfalls in Regulatory Approvals of Antimicrobial Products (PSX 2020 On Demand)
Many companies are seeking to develop new antimicrobial products, or extend existing products to respond to heightened concerns about communicable among the public and healthcare professionals. Manufacturers also are developing several convenience products that incorporate antimicrobials in novel ways, e.g., odor control textiles and mildew resistant shower curtains. While reviewing new products and re-registering existing products, EPA and FDA have increased their focus on potential environmental impacts of persistent active ingredients released into the environment. Manufacturers also are attempting to respond to consumers' interest in minimum risk pesticides and in applying them in new ways. Beyond demonstrating the product's efficacy, there are significant hurdles in obtaining the approval of new antimicrobial active ingredients and limitations and restrictions on minimum risk pesticides for antimicrobial applications. This presentation will examine examples of products in the market and currently under development focusing on how some technical and regulatory hurdles have been overcome for products with public health and non-public health claims and treated articles.
